You can devide sports massage into three main catigories: 

Pre-event sports massage - usually lasts up to 15 minutes just before a sporting event, e.g. you are competing in a 10k marathon and have asked your sports massage therapist to come with you and help warm up your muscles. This is a fairly intense 15 minute warm-up of the main muscles for the specific event, i.e. a full body massage is out of the question.

Post-event sports massage - the name speaks for itself, this type of sports massage is performed after the competition, preferably within 1-2 hours afterwards. The aim is to work through tense muscles after a competition or intense training, to break muscle memory and reprogramme the nervous system. This will help to minimise the risk of cramps and restore the correct muscle tone.

Recovery sports massage is a sports massage performed on relaxed muscles, exactly the kind of sports massage that everyone wants to get. This type of massage is less painful, similar to a deep tissue massage, performed more slowly, and an hour of this massage will have a very good effect on your athletic performance.

How to know if you have inflammation in your body and if you can have a sports massage

It is almost impossible to recognise, inflammation is an internal process and not always visible to the eye. A massage therapist cannot know about all your problems, so don't try to put the responsibility for your health on someone else, we can only help you.
